    If you’re trying to break into cybersecurity, you’ve probably run into this question everywhere: which bachelor’s degree should you actually get? A Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity? Information Technology? Computer Science?

    It’s one of the most common questions students ask, both in the classroom and online, and for good reason. The answer isn’t the same for everyone.

    Why This Question Is Worth Taking Seriously

    After 26+ years in IT, about half of that working full-time in cybersecurity, and more than a decade teaching university-level cybersecurity courses to over 10,000 students, one thing has become clear: there’s no single “correct” degree. The right choice depends on where you’re starting from and where you want your career to end up.

    What follows isn’t a definitive verdict on which degree wins. It’s a breakdown of the three most common paths, along with some perspective that might help you make a more informed decision.

    Before Anything Else: Read the Curriculum

    Regardless of which degree track you’re leaning toward, do this first: look at the actual courses.

    Two universities can offer a “Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity” with wildly different curricula. One program might dive deep into technical specialties like penetration testing or incident response. Another might lean heavily into governance, risk management, and compliance. The degree title tells you almost nothing on its own. The course list tells you everything.

    Option 1: Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity

    A cybersecurity degree does exactly what it says: it focuses narrowly on cybersecurity topics from day one.

    The upside: You get concentrated, in-demand expertise in a field that isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

    The trade-off: That narrow focus can work against you if you later decide to pivot into a different area of IT. Because the degree is so specialized, it doesn’t leave much room for exploring adjacent disciplines.

    Option 2: Bachelor’s in Information Technology

    An IT degree takes the opposite approach: breadth over depth. Expect coursework touching cybersecurity, networking, databases, programming, web development, systems administration, and more.

    Think of it as a well-rounded technology education rather than a deep dive into one specialty.

    The advantage here is flexibility. If you start in cybersecurity and later want to move into networking, systems administration, or another IT discipline, that flexibility is already baked into your background. Employers generally aren’t going to pass you over just because your degree says “Information Technology” instead of “Cybersecurity,” especially if your transcript shows real cybersecurity coursework. You get that exposure, plus a broader safety net for wherever your career goes next.

    This is essentially a way of future-proofing your degree.

    Option 3: Bachelor’s in Computer Science

    Computer Science is also broad, but the emphasis shifts heavily toward programming, software development, algorithms, and analytical problem-solving.

    If you genuinely enjoy coding, building software, or working through complex technical logic, this path can be a great fit, and it opens doors into cybersecurity roles that lean more technical, like security engineering or application security. If coding isn’t something that excites you, though, this probably isn’t the right starting point.

    A Personal Example

    For context on how this plays out in practice: the IT route was the one taken personally: a Bachelor’s in Information Technology in 2009, followed by a Master’s in Management Information Systems and Security in 2012, and eventually a Doctorate in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity around 2021.

    Two decades later, that career is fully rooted in cybersecurity, despite starting with a general IT degree. There’s nothing wrong with taking the IT route first if cybersecurity is where you ultimately want to land.

    But Things Have Changed

    It’s worth acknowledging that the landscape today looks different than it did back then. AI wasn’t part of the conversation. Cybersecurity existed as a field, but it wasn’t nearly as visible or in-demand as it is now.

    Today, nearly every university offers a dedicated cybersecurity program, and many of those programs keep improving. That’s a good thing, but the fact that cybersecurity degrees are everywhere doesn’t automatically make that the right choice for every student.

    The Bottom Line

    There’s no universal answer here. What matters is:

    • Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity → best if you want deep, focused expertise and are confident cybersecurity is your long-term path.
    • Bachelor’s in IT → best if you want flexibility and exposure across multiple technology disciplines while still building cybersecurity knowledge.
    • Bachelor’s in Computer Science → best if you’re drawn to programming and technical problem-solving as your entry point into the field.

    Whichever direction you lean, look closely at the curriculum, think honestly about your interests, and consider how you want to future-proof your career, not just for your first job, but for wherever it takes you after that.
